Silver and gold are used for coating mirror because first surface mirrors use the substrate to keep form ... even though the silver shas the best initial front-surface reflectivity in the visible spectrum it is unsuitable for optical mirrorsbecause it quickly oxidizes and absorbs atmospheric sulfur to create a dark, low-reflectivity tarnish.
