He helps talk them out of their state of panic by telling them that these tough sailors are the ones who are incharge. And the fact that it would be better to choose getting hanged rather than giving into a situation of a storm like this.

Furthermore, he exclaims that the boatswain would surely never let anybody drown even if that boat, they were sailing on would be no stronger than a nutshell.
