Graphite has carbon atoms with three covalent bonds.  Amongst the other carbon atoms, they are layered in between in the shape of the hexagonal patterns.

With one loose electron from each atom moves around in the gaps between the layers. There are weaker covalent bonds between these layers; hence, they can easily slide over each other.

Therefore,  it is extremely soft and conducts electricity, that is why it is used as a lubricant.
