why is graphite considered an element

because graphite contains many carbon atoms and no other matter.it burns in air completely to form co2 which signifies that it is made up of carbon only . that's why it is called an element

We can't directly say that Graphite is an element. Graphite is actually allotrope of an element, namely Carbon. So, when you see the structure of only one element carbon, indicating that it has only one type of atoms. That is why Graphite is known as an element.
