Graphite is made of a triple covalent bond which allow the carbon atoms to slide over each other. That is why it is a soft lubricant. These sliding layers allow it to make marks, so we use it in pencils. It contains a large number of free electrons, so it is a good conductor of heat and electricity as compared to diamond which is not.
