Pencil leads are made of clay and graphite. While clay gives the hardness and pallidness (H characteristics), graphite gives the B characteristics to a pencil which can be described as the blackness and softness. The reason why it is selected among the other alternatives of pencil raw material may be that its crystal structure is very suitable to leave mark on a surface and also its abundance and availability are important parameters. -- Graphite is the actually "lead" material that's used in pencils. This is the ideal material because graphite chemically forms a carbon bond. Graphite is easy to work with because it is soft and can be encased into a wooden barrel. :)
