why is H2SO4 called oil of vitrol?

Sulphuric acid is known as oil of vitriol because it was initially prepared by distilling Green vitriol (FeSo4.7H2O) and hence the name oil of vitriol

2FeSO4.7H2O-->Fe2O3+SO3+SO2+14H2O
