As the quantitative trait loci (QTL) effects are small and highly influenced by environmental factors, accurate phenotyping with replicated trials is needed. This is possible with doubled haploidy organisms because of their truebreeding nature and because they can conveniently be produced in large numbers.

Haploid can also be produced by culturing - unfertilized ovules.

Haploid plants are very useful in plant breeding because of the following reasons:-

A. They carry single set of chromosome that's why even a very small change that is mutation can be detected easily in haploid.

B. These haploids are used to produce homozygous diploids by the process of colchicine treatment and such homozygous diploids are used as parents while crossing.

C. Use of haploids in producing pure lines as it has reduced the period required for developing new varities from 10 years to 5 years.
