Answer:

He's the hero (obviously) — but he deserves it. In his position, so many of us would be mean and bitter, but Harry is generally kind and loyal. He doesn't want harm for anyone if possible — even Peter Pettigrew. Harry is a good leader (hello, Quidditch captain), and he's incredibly brave

Answer:

Arguably the two most important characters across the entirety of the Harry Potter story are Harry himself and his arch-nemesis, Lord Voldemort. The former is a boy wizard, famous around the world for his ability to withstand the killing curse, and the latter is a middle-aged man (if you can still call him that) with an overwhelming life ambition to once more put an end to Harry.

There are a variety of reasons why you could claim Harry himself was the best character in the Potter world, but also a fair amount of reasons why you can claim it was actually Voldemort. We’ve compared the reasons for each.

VOLDEMORT WAS BETTER: He Had A More Interesting Back Story

While Harry’s backstory was tragic, it was relatively simple: he was an orphan who lived with abusive relatives. He hadn’t had the time to develop beyond that at the start of the story. Voldemort had lived a full life in which he had already committed many murders, lived in an orphanage and his own very broken childhood home, been to Hogwarts and started a wizarding war. Not to mention the fact that he had been ‘killed’ by his own spell.

HARRY WAS BETTER: We Got To Know Him Throughout His Entire Childhood

Harry might not have had a long and complicated backstory when we met him, but this effectively turned him into a blank canvas of a person.

We met a boy who didn’t know he was anything special at all and we got to see him develop from that into the victor of a huge war involving all wizards. That’s pretty special.

VOLDEMORT WAS BETTER: His Early Life Was Relatively Mysterious

Despite the fact that we know a lot about Voldemort’s early life and where he was at each stage of his childhood, it’s important to remember that Voldemort was at Hogwarts just as long as Harry. The difference is that we don’t know the ins and outs of his time in education, which were arguably his most formative years. That mystery adds an even more sinister and intriguing depth to his character.

HARRY WAS BETTER: He Won

Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) and friends 19 years older

Harry, after so many years of trying, eventually defeated Lord Voldemort. That’s not to say he didn’t have a lot of help, but he still delivered the final blow after his attempt at sacrificing himself for the cause.

Obviously there was no way JK Rowling was going to write a children’s book in which the bad guy won, but it was still incredibly satisfying to see the hero come out victorious.

VOLDEMORT WAS BETTER: He Had A Maintained Impact In The Cursed Child

Whether or not you respect The Cursed Child as true Harry Potter canon or not, it still happened. Harry himself doesn’t have an overwhelming presence (though he is still important) in the production, but Voldemort and his influence on his offspring still manage to wreak havoc in a variety of alternate universes where Harry couldn’t stop him.
