Arguably the two most important characters across the entirety of the Harry Potter story are Harry himself and his arch-nemesis, Lord Voldemort. The former is a boy wizard, famous around the world for his ability to withstand the killing curse, and the latter is a middle-aged man (if you can still call him that) with an overwhelming life ambition to once more put an end to Harry.

VOLDEMORT WAS BETTER: He Had A More Interesting Back Story
While Harry’s backstory was tragic, it was relatively simple: he was an orphan who lived with abusive relatives. He hadn’t had the time to develop beyond that at the start of the story. Voldemort had lived a full life in which he had already committed many murders, lived in an orphanage and his own very broken childhood home, been to Hogwarts and started a wizarding war. Not to mention the fact that he had been ‘killed’ by his own spell.

Harry might not have had a long and complicated backstory when we met him, but this effectively turned him into a blank canvas of a person.

Despite the fact that we know a lot about Voldemort’s early life and where he was at each stage of his childhood, it’s important to remember that Voldemort was at Hogwarts just as long as Harry. The difference is that we don’t know the ins and outs of his time in education, which were arguably his most formative years. That mystery adds an even more sinister and intriguing depth to his character.
