Unlike skeletal and smooth muscles cardiac muscle has its own initiator of contraction which is called sinoatrial node (SA node, sinus node).
While the initiator is the SA node, the regulation of the heartbeat is handled by parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems according to the requirements of the body.
