The entire spiritual effort is focused on tackling one thing - "The Ego" . As individuals we all have Egos. Ego is not a bad thing. Being egoistic is.

To give yourself an exaggerated sense of importance is the problem. Expecting appreciation and acceptance from others is the problem.

The danger of ego raising its hood is far more in the spiritual path, because you are battling directly against it there. Against the very same ego which gives rise to your individuality. The irony is that you try to use the very same ego all along to transcend it. And who would want to commit suicide?

Thats why humility is among the greatest virtues. It is a direct reflection of reduction in ego. Absolute humility is total destruction of ego. Humility

in the wordly sense as we know it is just being less egoistic. There is no concious effort done to conquer the ego which is the ultimate g

Humility is considered a great virtue among the majority of mankind. Even the proud walking among us would confess that humility is a good thing. Well, maybe not Donald Trump, but everyone else would. As a follower of Jesus I should seek meekness and humility. Blessed are the meek, the Lord said, for they shall inherit the earth (Matt 5:5). We know, not only from the Bible, but also from our human experience that pride comes before a fall and the proud may get away with it in the near future but even the Al Capones of this world get busted (he evaded arrest for 10 years). So humility is a good thing! A truly humble person will stand firm during drought and trial.
