Why is hydro energy called conventional source of energy although it is a renewable source of energy?

because we create dam on river for generating power so it change lots thing around river.and we can generate power only by dam so we can't reuse it for several time itis unidirectional method water flow from high to low and using the force of this we get . instead if we use solar energy we only get energy .we use several times .
