Why is hydrogen written H2 instead of H?

See this is because substances like Oxygen, Hydrogen,Nitrogen chlorine are present as diatomic state. 2 atoms means a molecule. So, we can say that they are present in molecular form. We always find O2,H2,Cl2 and S8(polyatomic) and not O,H,Cl,S. These atoms as a sinngle are not stable or fixed. So, they have to be in environment. If they are not stable they will not be in environment.
So, one oxygen atoms combine with another oxygen atom to make a molecule.It is a rule that in chemical equations we write symbols witht their atomicity.
