Ice is applied to ligaments ( or any other soft tissue) when it is injured.
Injury to ligament or any other soft tissue leads to swelling and inflammation of the region accompanied by pain and heating up the injured area. When a tissue gets injured, the supply of blood to the region increases and leads to swelling and inflammation. The metabolism of the concern tissue increases leading to heat.
Applying ice to this region reduces bleeding into the tissue, reduces swelling, pain and leads to numbness in the area to reduce pain and limit the effects of swelling. Cooling would slow down the rate of metabolism and prevent the cells from starving for oxygen. It would also slow down the nerve conduction and suppress the release of inflammatory factors. It also prevents the area from getting stiff due to the excess tissue fluid that gets collected.
Applying a bag of ice or an ice pack helps relieve pain and prevent swelling by decreasing the blood flow into the area.
Care must be taken that ice is not applied directly on the skin as it might cause burning or frost bite.
