India is a democratic republic because the Head of the State is elected by the people. A democratic republic is a representative government where the power resides with the people. People choose and majority decides.

India is called a republic as the representatives are elected by the people of the country. The representatives elected by citizens have the power to take decisions on our behalf. In India there exist an elected head of state, i.e., the President. India declared itself a Sovereign, Democratic and Republic state with the adoption of the Constitution on January 26, 1950.
