A republic is a form of government in which power resides in the people, and the government is ruled by elected leaders run according to law.
While coining the Indian constitution, the "front cover" of it being the preamble describes India as a "Sovereign Socialist Secular Democratic Republic". The constitution was adapted by the assembly in late 1949 and came into force on 26th Jan 1950. Till that time a lot of princely states where annexed to India under the Instrument of accession act. These princely states were former monarchs. Just appreciate the significance and necessity to insist on that word "REPUBLIC" in the books. It clarifies amply that a monarch (king and family) has no say directly related to rule of India but only voice out his opinion and rule through ones elected representative (or ones-self if elected).
USA signed the declaration of independence and I believe many of the states did not sign in the first occasion. California for instance was under Spanish control but they overthrew their oppressors and signed the declaration of independence much later. I have not studied much history and not so familiar with US history so my facts can be a little misplaced here and there. But one thing I can say clearly is :- Lot of states got united under a single constitution and hence the name.
