Continents are often a matter of convention, rather than  a very precise definition. Usually they are defined as:
a large landmassthat's clearly demarcated by one or more geographic phenomena; for example, North America is bound by the Pacific and the Atlantic while Europe has the Urals to its east and Black Sea to it's south east separating it from Asia.
The Indian subcontinent meets both of those criteria
