India is called a subcontinent because of the reasons given below.
- The Indian subcontinent is a physiographic region of South Asia.
- India is a big, huge landmass and it covers an expansive area of the land.
- It projects as a discrete geographical unit from the remaining continent.
- The landmass has the Himalayas in the north, while in the south, there is the Indian ocean. Arabian Sea and Bay of Bengal on the south-west and the south-east respectively surround this great Indian subcontinent.
The countries that are considered to form a part of the Indian subcontinent are:
India,
Bangladesh,
Bhutan,
Nepal,
Maldives,
Sri Lanka, and
Pakistan.
Thus, due to the reasons mentioned above, India is called a subcontinent.
