Two prime reasons for India being a subcontinent is because it has both separate political and geographical entity.
Speaking of its geographical entity, it is surrounded by Himalayas in the north and water bodies from three sides in the south along with numerous plateaus, rainforests, deserts etc.
In terms of political and cultural entity, it is a house of various cultures and races.
Considering its land size not being as huge as a continent, it is termed as a subcontinent.
