India is a sovereign socialist secular democratic republic. Its constitution, which came into effect January 26, 1950, provides for a parliamentary form of government, at the center and in the states. The constitution also contains an extensive set of directive principles akin to the U.S. Bill of Rights.

India is called republic because it has a form of government in which representatives are entitled to act on behalf of people whome they represent .
