It's easy.
In historic period only one super continent was there which were broken down into several continents due to moving of the plate away from each other or you can also say that expanding of universe.
Due to this several continents were formed.
India was in such a type of continent.But due to several endogenetic movement the continent broken down and a large part of it started floating and hitted the Asia which were later called as India.
Therefore India is known as sub-continent.
Sub-continent term is used to express that it is a type of continent.
