India is NOT a great nation. No nation on this earth is great. It is the idea behind those nations that make them great. And in the same way, the idea of India is what makes this country great. People may point out its rich history, the glories of the past and the people who ruled it before our time to tell you how great we were. But I am here to tell you how great India is today.
The idea of India was so profound and so quixotic that people like Churchill gave it just a few years before the country splinters into a hundred nations. yet we stand today as a testament to the success of a wild but beautiful idea
Indians had universal suffrage ( the right to vote for every citizen irrespective of caste, creed and social status) from the day it became an independent nation. Here is but a small list of countries that bestowed the same rights to its citizens AFTER India
United States : 1965 ( 189 years after its independence)
Canada : 1960
Australia : 1962
India is an evolving idea. India created an affirmative action program (we call it the reservations system) in 1950, a mere 3 years after independence. Sure its not a perfect system. But our reservation system has lifted millions out of poverty. The US's own affirmative action program was created in 1961 (182 years after independence)
The idea that any one and I mean anyone can become the leader of one third of the world population is the wildest in the world. India's political system, as much as it is flawed, has proven to the world that Indian's can accept a Sikh, Muslim, Christian, Hindu, Dalit, Brahmin or anyone from any part of the country to lead them. The western world is still struggling to accept anyone who is not christian to lead them.
The Intelligence Bureau of India was lead by a muslim, Syed Asif Ibrahim, until 2013. He is now Modi's special envoy on "Countering Terrorism and Extremism" with a charter to liaise with governments of West Asian countries, including Afghanistan and Pakistan. A country that is 80% hindu, probably one of the first in the world to go through radical islamic terrorism has no problem with that. That is why the idea of India is amazing.
People call the US a melting pot but India has been doing this for ages. The US for example had a Chinese and Asian exclusion on immigration until the 60's. India on the other hand had people come and stay for years.Arabs, Iranians, Sri Lankans, Aryans you name it. No one was ever turned back.
We are country with a thousand languages but no national language. Our de facto national language is English, a language that is alien to this land but is spoken by more people in India than anywhere else in the world.
We are nation of numbers. The idea that any citizen out of a billion people can go anywhere in this nation to make a living, no matter what language he speaks and where he comes from is an idea that the world still struggles with today. Try doing that in China without a permit or Russia without government approval.
This is but a small list of things that make the idea of India so beautiful. I know that India as a nation has issues, but as long as the idea of India remains alive in the hearts of the people, we will be allright.
