India is not the only country with such vast diversity.

The first work by Feron lists nations by linguistic dissimilarity. India rank 17th on this list. The most diverse nations according to Feron are in Central and East Africa, South East Asia.
Another work by Alesina uses three indicators- ethnic, religious and linguistic (thus considered more exhaustive). A list based on this method has South Africa, USA and Australia in top 3 positions with India at a dismal rank of 88!
