Hey friend,

The Iron and Steel industry is called a basic industry because:

  1. All industries whether they are heavy industry, medium industry, or light industry depends on Iron or steel industry for machinery.
  2. Steel is required for constructing a variety of machinery, defense and construction goods.
  3. Daily use items like  safety pins, containers etc are made of steel.

Hope this helped!!!

The iron and steel industry is called the basic industry for the following reasons:

1. All industries depend on heavy, medium or light machinery.

2. Steel is required to manufacture various engineering, construction and defense items.

3. Daily consumer goods like containers, safety pins etc. are made of steel.

(i) High cost

(ii) limited availability of coking coal

(iii) Low productivity of labor

(iv) Irregular supply of energy

(v) Poor infrastructure

It acts as the requirement of all other industries ...

As raw materials, machinery and other needs ...

Materials for building, transport equipment, machine and making equipment, aircraft etc.

The industries whose finished products are used as raw materials for other industries are called the original industries. Since iron is used in many industries as raw material, it is called the basic industry.

It is also helpful in providing employment.

It also helps in the development of agriculture. Note: Iron and steel industry is the basis of many other primary, secondary and tertiary jobs.
