The production of dihydrogen can be increased by reacting carbon monoxide of syngas with steam. This is called water-gas shift reaction. The products are CO and hydrogen. This mixture of carbon monoxide and hydrogen is called is called water gas. C + H2O + CO + H2 It is difficult to separate hydrogen from water gas. Therefore, to increase the production of hydrogen, the water gas is mixed with steam in the presence of iron chromate as a catalysts.
