Coz its generally a hard and light material.
It doesnt rust if painted properly.
It can take huge loads easily.

Iron is used to make Steel, and steel is used in bridges, because it is extremely strong and relatively cheap, for the same reason it is used in making of houses buildings,cars ,ships etc.
