Since the cohesive forces between the molecules of mercury are very large as compared to adhesive forces between molecules of mercury and glass containers. Due to which, the mercury does not wet the surface of a glass container. That is why, it is difficult to make mercury enter a fine thermometer tube.

Hope it helps
