People get killed on the beach during a thunderstorms because they’re the highest object, attracting lightning, and because they have their feet either in wet sand or in the water, either of which conducts the electricity of the lightning bolt through you, killing you. Swimming is of little help because the water conducts electricity around where the bolt hits the water.
