Answer:

When the river of emotions bursts its banks and expectations go over the edges of reality, the brain creates hallucinations. Ringxiety-stricken people feel illusive vibrating alerts and hear phantom phone rings, since absence of ringing generates scaring emptiness and destroys their self-esteem. Expect the unexpected...

Who wants to miss out on anything? Who wants to get whacked in the head before he can realise it? Who wants to get kidnapped in a bustling crowd?

It's not as if you have to keep your eyeballs bulging out and the pinna at right angles to the plane of your temples every time. Being alert can seem very tiring, but trust me, it's not. It just takes a little effort. Paying attention and keeping your senses alert will actually help you to memorise things better, be aware of situations without having to deal with them every time and, of course, be safe. Not only on the road, but in all walks of life.

Being alert is very important for functioning in the modern world with all of its complicated tasks and demands. Of course being alert is also important for survival, to notice threats/dangers and respond to them in a timely manner. If your living circumstances are such where you don’t need to function at a high level and it is unlikely you will meet any dangers or threats in your day to day routine, then alertness isn’t as important, but who really lives like that?

I think in this day and age a lot of focus is put on increasing one’s levels of alertness because we have become very production-oriented as a society (at least in the US and many other countries). In this type of society, you are always being pushed to do more and to do it on a higher level, and being alert helps with that.
