Why is it better to call the Dark phase of photosynthesis as a light independent phase

In the dark phase of the photosynthesis all the reactions that take place do not depend on sunlight.
So this dark phase of the photosynthesis is also called the light independent phase.

The dark phase of photosynthesis has nothing to do with dark. This process can take place even in the presence of light,but does not necessarily require light. Hence it would be better to call it Light independent phase rather than Dark phase
