Why is it better to use a divider than a ruler, while measuring the length of a line segment?

a divider has a small pointer on both itself so when you keep the pointer on two edges and then keep the pointer on the ruler you will get an appropriate measure instead of directly using the scale as it is not that clear when you keep it directly and measure you might miss millimetre or something.
