Answer:

Well, now that the word "idle" has been changed from "ideal," things seem to make sense. An "idle" mind is a mind not doing anything. The devil can give it something to do. If we are working hard, we have no time to mess around and perhaps get ourselves in trouble. Anyway, the answer that follows relates to the question containing the word "ideal" mind:

I am not sure this is the correct phrase, but as a phrase, there is a play on words. The ideal mind is one that is sound, which the devil wouldn't have much to work with, unless he was able to convince the person in possession to play the devil. But, a person, who deals with ideals has visions and values that are at times impractical and when a person is not perfect or has fallen, he/she is easy to manipulate. They are vulnerable to the negative. And it is in those persons, who draw into themselves reckless behavior and stagnancy to the point of affecting irredeemable acts, who are often taken down for the last time and have in effect sold their souls to the devil. People too, perhaps, who seek the blissful way avoid the realities of life and never address the lessons that life is by nature. When Thomas More wrote Utopia, he was half-joking, because such a place is impossible.

The best example I can give is my learning to deal with my dying mother. While I love her very much, she is dying every day. She has Alzheimer's and cannot walk due to a broken hip that was recently repaired and a frail body. Because my job stresses me out, I can only see her approximately two times a week and my sister sees her too. Between the two of us we do our best. Ideally, I should be with her 24/7 and she should be with me living in my condo, but this is not realistic. Understanding oneself in the context of reality is a key to remaining sane and not being taken by the devil's guilt-trips and regret inflections. All you can do is try. I try to make my mother happy. I am not perfect, but ideally there is perfection and reality and I work within those parameters.

The lazy mind is referred to as the devil's house as a free mind often builds up negative thoughts.

  • A lazy mind is a devil's house is a proverb.
  • When a person sits idle, evil or negative thoughts enter the mind quickly.
  • When a person has nothing to do, all kinds of bad ideas come to mind. Such thoughts can turn a person into a demon.
  • For a long time, a person's mind will not stay empty unless it is busy with fruitful ideas. Thus, a person should not be idle for long and do some work or any activity they love to keep them busy.
