why is it colder in mountains than in the plains?

as height increases pressure decrease which results in gradual decrease in temperature

It is colder in mountains than in the plains because temperature increases with an increase in altitude. So as the mountains are located on higher altitude it is very cold there but the plains are located in the lower altitude so so are not so cold as the mountains
