when applying force at the free the perpendicular distance to the axis of rotation of the door increases.so the moment is also increased.(moment=force applied*perpendicular distance between the line of action of the force and axis of rotation of the door)moment increased means the tendency for rotation increased.so it is easier to open a door by applying the force at the free.
