A sponge has small pores containing air, so, when we try to compress it, all the air rushes out and so we can easily squeeze it.

Hi friend!!

A sponge is a special type of solid with air cavities present in it which are filled with air molecules..
When We compress the sponge, the air is pushed out due to force and hence the sponge gets compressed whereas when we remove the force, it regains it's original shape...
So it is known as a solid since it retains its shape.. However We see that unlike other solids it can be compressed due to the air spaces present in between the gaps of the sponge...

Hope that helps you!
