Because pressure exerted by broad cloth is less than the pressure exerted by the rope
As we know that pressure is directly proportional to its area of cross-section

⏺IT IS easy to hold a heavy bundle with a broad cloath instead of thin rope because, in case of a broad cloth, surface area is large, since pressure is inversely proportional to area, therfore as area increases pressure decreases, and this is in case of cloth...
⏹⏹In case of rope, the surface area is small, hence there large pressure acts, therfore we feel heavy will holding object with rope...
✌✌hope it helps u✌✌
