It is important to identify areas that are prone to earthquakes in order to prepare for the possibility that they may occur. ... If there is an area that rarely receives earthquakes of any significant size, there is no reason to construct every bridge, building, etc, to be earthquake resistant.

It is important for us to identify areas which are prone to earthquake due to following reasons.
- To find out possibilities that they may occur.
- This is a part of disaster planning
- In areas where earthquakes are rarely observed, it is not necessary to construct every building or bridge etc to be earthquake resistant.
- Earthquake resistant construction for bulidings cost very high.
- Hence where there are no chances of earthquake , money should not be wasted on unnecessary infrastructure upgrades.
- on the contrary if such areas are identified then it is necessary to build earthquake resistant buildings
