Facultative anaerobic bacteria, such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli and Listeria monocytogenes can colonize well oxygenated regions as well as necrotic regions farther from blood vessels [9]. The ability to grow independent of oxygen enables these bacteria to target both primary tumors and metastases [8,51–53].
