It is important to learn about evolution because evolutionary biology is the science describing the process leading to something we all see and want to understand: the variety of life on earth.

It is also important because it will protect from falling for creationist nonsense.

And it is important to understand that humans also appeared in evolution because this helps to understand our place in nature.

I am not sure, however, that learning about hominid evolution is particularly important. If someone is particularly interested in hummingbirds and focusses on their evolution, I do not see a convincing reason to tell her or him to study hominids instead of the birds. As long as the person understands that we are part of nature, I do not see a problem in focussing on other parts of evolutionary biology.
