Phloem transports food prepared by photosynthesis in leaves to other parts of the plants. Food needs to be transported to the roots down as well as to the fruits and flowers upon the branches. Plants can store sugar in the roots and can later mobilise when other plant parts such as buds need it in the spring season. So transport by phloem is bidirectional as compared to unidirectional in the xylem.
