hey ,
heat is transferred by three methods >radiation
>conduction
>convection.
in an open fire radiation and convection are significant heat transfer methods.
when you have your hand next to the fire , you are only feeling the heat from radiation . it is noticeable but not as intense as the heat above the fire .
above the open fire there is more heat because u r in the convection stream , the trail of hot gases , both combustion products and air from near the fire that has been heated , rises straight -up .
in short , it is hotter above a fire becoz there is a more concentrated region of heat energy.
