It is necessary to make a physical contact between a thermocouple (a sensor to measure temperature just like thermometer, only it's digital) and an object so as to put zeroth law in action as zeroth law helps us to compare the temperatures of different objects. when the thermocouple and object are in thermal equilibrium, the thermocouple indicates the temperature of the object.
