If the organic compound contains both nitrogen and sulphur, sodium sulphocyanide (NaCNS) is formed during preparation of Lassaigne's extract. Sodium sulphocyanide reacts with ferric chloride and gives blood red colouration due to formation of ferric sulphocyanide
