I think you mean why is it necessary to sterilise root nodules that contain Rhizobia. ( Rhizobium is the bacterium present in the root nodules of leguminous plants )
one of the reasons here could be because soil is a heterogenous and rich medium for supporting all kinds of non fastidious (non selective or non fussy) microbiota, meaning that you'll find thousands of other organisms including bacteria, protists and fungi apart from your organisms of interest I.e. Rhizobium.
The Rhizobia are enclosed within nodules and will not die however, the organisms present in the soil that tags along with the roots may interfere with your study and hence , sterilisation is a must.

It is necessary -
(a) - to prevent the destruction of rhizobia.
(b) - to prevent the bacterial infection to us.
(c) - to prevent the mixing of other bacteria with rhizobia.
