Why is it not advised to hold the thermometer by its bulb ?

When we have to measure temperature, bulb is touched with the surface. Bulb contains mercury or alcohol in it. Holding thermometer by bulb will cause mercury or alcohol to expand or contract, due to body temperature. Hence we will not obtain correct reading of tempreture
