Answer:
We actually do. It is called the market and you vote every single day with your dollars.
Goods, services, technologies and even places to live are all determined by economics. Goods and services that you don’t want or need fall by the wayside, while others gain your support because they are desirable to you. Leaving a city because the taxes are too high or the services suck (or going to a city which has an attractive job market) are examples of how marketplace “voting” affects places as well.
The real issue is politicians, and the political, academic, media and bureaucratic classes have managed to corrupt the marketplace with taxes, regulations and subsidies in attempts to negate your “vote”. Stop and consider why windmills are built against massive opposition, and why they deliver expensive and unreliable electricity (and are NOT built where they might obstruct the views of the rich and powerful). You and I would never support them in a free market economy (or if you did, you would be outvoted by people who don’t want to pay $.13/kW/H for electricity when hydro and thermal can deliver reliable electricity for $.08/kW/H [prices for Ontario, Canada]).
So voting out meddlesome politicians and electing ones who will do a controlled drawdown and strip the ability of academics, media and bureaucrats to interfere in the marketplace will indeed establish the “rule of the people”.
