Why is it possible to compress gases but not solids or liquids?

Because gases have large spaces between their molecules. So they can be brought together by compressing and therefore can even be liquefied.
On the other hand, solids and liquids have very little spaces between their molecules due to which they cannot be brought together by compressing as they are already close to each other.

Because the inter molecular distance between molecules of gases are large and that in the solid and liquid are not more.
