Door bells are meant to be operated intermittently and not supposed to be continuously on. Most of the old door bells have electromagnets that gets energised and actuate a hammer and hit a gong. After hitting it stays there till the circuit is de-energised. After releasing the power switch , the hammer comes back to normal position and hit back in its metal rest or another gong. Thats how that Ting Dong sound came. Nowadays we have a inbuilt make break switch or simply the bell is electronic and it will be a nuisance if the switch is pressed continuous -as correctly said in the previous response.
