Why it is said : Persons suffering from Diabetes Mellitus have higher chances of developing Acute Myocardial Infarction

\bf{-----------------------@RockingStarPratheek}

Diabetes mellitus is also known as hyperglycemia, is an endocrine disorder of pancreas. In this disorder the blood glucose level increases above the normal range. The excessive level of glucose is excreted in the urine. As the water follows the glucose it causes excessive urination and dehydration resulting in polydipsia (extreme thirst). A myocardial infraction occurs when the blood flow decreases to the part of the heart. It causes damage to the heart muscles which leads to intense chest pain or discomfort. Persons suffering from Diabetes Mellitus have higher chances of developing Acute Myocardial infarction because there is a close link between both of them. Obesity, hypertension, and dyslipidemia are some of the common conditions seen in people with Diabetes Mellitus. All of these are the cardiovascular risk factors which place persons with diabetes Mellitus at increased risk of cardiac events such as myocardial infarction. Higher levels of blood sugar slowly attack the walls of the artery and facilitate the deposition of cholesterol. A higher incidence of myocardial infarction in patients with diabetes Mellitus is due to increased coagulability. The person with Diabetes Mellitus has increased expression of glycoprotein IIB/IIIA receptors and vWF responsible for the activation of platelets. Also, increased plasminogen activator inhibitor type I increases thrombus formation decreases fibrinolysis, and accelerates plaque formation. Lipid-rich plaques can block the blood flowing in the arteries which increases the rich of myocardial infarction. Apart from these, decreased levels of circulating anticoagulants in a person with Diabetes Mellitus such as protein c and antithrombin II also increase the risk of myocardial infarction. All of these factors in the patients with Diabetes Mellitus place the person in a state of prothrombotic and procoagulant responsible for higher rates of myocardial infractions in such patients.

Therefore, Persons suffering from Diabetes Mellitus have higher chances of developing Acute Myocardial Infarction

Explanation:

Answer :

It is thought that the higher incidence of myocardial infarction in patients with DM is attributable to increased coagulability[58]. Many studies have found that diabetics have increased expression of glycoprotein IIB/IIIA receptors and vWF, which are responsible for platelet activation[59,60].

Over time, high blood sugar can damage blood vessels and the nerves that control your heart. People with diabetes are also more likely to have other conditions that raise the risk for heart disease: High blood pressure increases the force of blood through your arteries and can damage artery walls.
