Why is it said that disasters are of different severity and dimensions?

Well, look at an earthquake. The magnitude of an earthquake is measured on a Richter scale. SO there are different earthquakes in history, all varying in their magnitude. For example, in Bangalore, (I don't remember when, but it was around 4-5 years back) there was an earthquake that was not very strong. Nonetheless, the people felt the earth shaking. No harm was done. Now, compare that to the earthquake in 1960 Chile. The Valdivia Earthquake, the Worst recorded in history. Around 6000 people died, and this was followed by aftershocks and tsunamis. So, widespread destruction. I guess I've made my point here.
